Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport on the Passing of Brian Gaffney

26 July 2011

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport notes the sad passing of sport journalist, Brian Gaffney - a former Cape Herald journalist and protégé of Ted Doman and the late Lennie Kleintjies.

According to Dr Ivan Meyer, Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Brian Gaffney will be remembered for the contribution he made to ensuring that sport, particularly on the Cape Flats, received the media coverage that it deserved and, in so doing, played a critical role in promoting sport amongst our people. His immense knowledge of sport in general, and baseball, softball and football in particular, was admired by many.

In 2009, he was awarded the runner-up prize in the Sanlam National Community Press Competition in the sport writing category and, in 2010, was awarded the Vodacom Regional Journalist Award for his exposé titled "No Saints at All".

Brian Gaffney was a dedicated, respected journalist, a tireless fighter for the promotion of sport and often fearless in his quest to expose the wrongs in sport. He will be sadly missed, says Minister Meyer.
