DCAS Neighbourhood Development Programme wins big at Service Excellence Awards

5 December 2019

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) was recognised at the annual Western Cape Premier’s Service Excellence Awards once again on Wednesday 4 December 2019, as a programme run out of the Sport Development office won awards in two categories.

The Neighbourhood Development Programme claimed Silver in the Best Implemented Project/Programme and Best Public Service Innovator (Team or Project) categories.

Paul Hendricks, Director of the Sport Development unit, said the awards would not have been possible without the hard work of everyone in the unit.

“Whilst it is us who went there last night to receive the award none of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for everyone involved, including the assistant coaches who work in the MOD Centres or ECD Centres of Recreation,” Mr Hendricks said.

“All of those guys play a role – the assistant coaches, the coaches, the district managers. That really is what pulls this directorate together. It is thanks to all of them that the Directorate works the way that it does, that it has the atmosphere, culture and values that it has. That carries through into everything that we do.

"I really want to say a big thank you to all the guys who work in Sport Development. The fact that we were successful in two categories, just shows what teamwork can do.”

The Neighbourhood Development Programme sees children from 340 under-served, no-fee and low-fee schools in at-risk communities offered sports and cultural opportunities and provided with life skills and social skills coaching. It has also created 894 work opportunities.

DCAS works to provide sports, recreation and cultural opportunities to communities throughout the Western Cape. BETTER TOGETHER.
