Better Together Games lifts camaraderie, promotes healthy living in Eden region

30 September 2019

On Friday, 27 September 2019, Western Cape Government officials from the Eden District Municipality gathered in the interest of promoting physical health and team spirit at the Eden Better Together Games (BTG) in Oudtshoorn.

The event is organised by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and sees employees from all government departments compete in a range of sporting activities, including soccer, rugby, cricket, athletics, cycling, darts, chess and dominoes.

This year the Eden BTG was hosted at the De Jager Sports Complex, and the day’s activities kicked off with teams marching around the tartan track in the style of the Olympic Games.

Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director for Sport and Recreation, welcomed all the guests and participants before everyone stood to sing the national anthem.

“This is part of a series of events that we are hosting around the Western Cape. Eden is our third Better Together Games of 2019, and I can say that it is the best attended so far.” Dr Bouah said. “One of the goals for the Better Together Games is for all of us at the different Western Cape Government Departments to get to know each other better and to become physically fit.”

Dr Bouah also thanked sponsors Old Mutual and Nedbank for making the event possible by partnering with DCAS.

The fun run was the first sport code to commence following the official proceedings and was one of the best attended of the day. Although all the games were played in the spirit of fair play and fun, there was also a definite competitive edge to the events.

The Western Cape Health and Education departments had a strong contingent at the event, with the South African Infantry School from the Oudtshoorn army base and the local SA Police Services also attending in large numbers.

The Eden BTG was the third of 2019, following the Overberg District BTG on 13 September 2019 at the Glaskasteel Sports Complex in Bredasdorp and the Cape Winelands District BTG at Boland Park Sport Stadium in Worcester on 20 September.

Central Karoo will host their games on National Recreation Day (4 October) at the Rustdene Sports Grounds, Beaufort West.  The West Coast will get their turn on 11 October at the Saldanha Sports Grounds and the Metro BTG will take place on 25 October at the Stellenbosch University Sports Grounds.

The Western Cape Government works to promote sport participation as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. BETTER TOGETHER
