Minister Marais' Speech at Provincial Geographical Names Committee inauguration

27 September 2019

WESTERN CAPE MINISTER OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND SPORT, ANROUX MARAIS

WESTERN CAPE GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES COMMITTEE INAUGURATION

27 SEPTEMBER 2019

Good morning, goeiemôre, molweni nonke,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome the newly appointed Western Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee members today and thank them for accepting the very important responsibility of serving on this pivotal Committee.

I am sure you are all aware that Geographical Names are crucial in the process of building a sense of belonging and social inclusivity, not only in the Western Cape, but South Africa as a whole. It also serves as a restorative means to heal our once divided society. There is no doubt in my mind that the Committee will discharge its legal mandate as prescribed in the South African Geographical Names Act with the integrity, respect and dignity it requires.

I hereby officially constitute the Committee for the new term as an advisory to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Sport for the next three years.

I would like to thank each one of you for rising to the occasion and I wish you well in the important task entrusted in you.

I thank you
