MEDIA STATEMENT: CITY AND PROVINCE IMPROVES COLLABORATION TO PROMOTE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND SPORT

This week, Minister Anroux Marais and Mayco Member for Community Development and Health, Dr Zahid Badroodien met to discuss issues affecting the cultural affairs and sport portfolio in the City of Cape Town.

Together with senior officials from the provincial Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and the City of Cape Town, Minister Marais and Dr Badroodien engaged on proposals for better collaboration between the two spheres of government to increase our service delivery footprint to all who call the city home. These include:

  • The status of the implementation protocol for libraries;
  • The reconsideration of the current funding model for various arts and cultural organizations;
  • An update on the departmental Memorandum of Agreement in terms of Sports and Recreation; and
  • Strengthening our partnership with regard to the sacred practice of initiation.

Following the productive engagement, Minister Marais said, “With our limited budget, the Western Cape Government has prioritised embedding good governance and integrated service delivery through partnerships and better spatial alignment. Maintaining meaningful sustainable partnerships has set the innovative scene that makes the Western Cape the leading sport and cultural destination of South Africa. We are committed to making a long-term impact on citizens lives in collaboration with municipalities, so that we can give effect to our vision of a socially inclusive, creative, active and connected Western Cape. We agreed to timelines for feedback and implementation in our meeting, now we plan to get to work, better together”.

In the weeks to come, Minister Marais will engage with the relevant Mayco members in each district of the province to proactively respond to the respective needs of every municipality we serve.
