New Louwville BMX track nearing completion

The residents of Louwville will soon be able to make use of their very own BMX track. This after Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Minister Anroux Marais of DCAS visited the site on Wednesday and found that construction was nearly complete.

The track was funded by DCAS and the Saldanha Bay Municipality. Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation, explained why the BMX track was built instead of a different type of sports facility.

“There are soccer fields around in most areas and a few years ago a decision was taken to promote cycling,” Dr Bouah said.

“Promoting the cycling economy means that you don’t only support the Cape Town Cycle Tour or the Double Coronation in Swellendam, you also support the BMXers so that the ordinary kids can also cycle and do their thing. You need rough terrain for BMX, which South Africa has in abundance.”

When completed, the track is expected to cost between R120 000 and R180 000. It is oval in shape and features several berms and hills.

Similar tracks have already been opened in Stellenbosch and Worcester. Funding was also provided for another in Drakenstein Municipality.

“BMX is also an Olympic sport and we had a young man from South Africa, Sifiso Nhlapo, who took part in the BMX event at the Olympic Games.,” added Dr Bouah.
