New borehole to keep Napier’s sport fields green and usable

10 April 2019

Fields at the Napier Sports Complex will in future be unaffected by the continuing drought in the Western Cape, with construction of a new borehole set to start in the coming days.

The new borehole is an initiative of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports (DCAS) and will be situated next to the current fields on Volhou Street, on the site of a future soccer field.

Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation, and Minister Anroux Marais were present at the ceremonial sod-turning in Napier on Tuesday.

“One of the questions that the drought has made us consider is how to address sport and recreation. During the drought everybody thought only of the water issue as a crisis, but we know that we also have a crisis at the sport and recreation sector that needs to be addressed,” Dr Bouah said.

“A solution that the minister came up with was the construction of boreholes in the municipalities. Our minister has been with DCAS since 2015 and over the past four years she has ensured that development of facilities as well as the development of sport and recreation takes place across the Western Cape,” he added.

Minister Marais, who spent much of Tuesday visiting the communities in the Overberg towns of Napier and Bredasdorp, said the new borehole would have a positive impact on the youth.

’It’s amazing for me to see how sport makes a difference in the lives of our young people. I believe that this borehole will help keep these sports fields in good condition. That is most important, because our youth are our future,’ the Minister said.

DCAS works to provide sport and recreation opportunities to communities across the Western Cape. BETTER TOGETHER.
