Cape Winelands sport welcomes financial contribution from DCAS

5 April 2019

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) showed its commitment to the development of the promotion of sports in the Cape Winelands during the 2019 cheque handovers.

DCAS hosted the handover event, in partnership with Old Mutual, on 4 April 2019 at the Van der Stel Sport Hall in Stellenbosch. A total of R1 820 000 was handed over to the Cape Winelands Sport Council.

The cheque handover is the culmination of a process during which DCAS considers sports federations for funding. Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation at DCAS, encouraged the federations to ensure that they comply with all the requirements when they apply for funding from DCAS.

Minister Anroux Marais delivered the keynote speech at the event, and stressed the importance of sport in our communities. She said that the funds will contribute to support and increase mass participation, skills development and talent identification in the province.

"This allocation will undoubtedly promote sport participation in order to contribute towards the reconciliation and development of the Western Cape community through the provision of equitable, accessible and affordable sports facilities, programmes and services," said Minister Marais.

The next handover event will take place in Bredasdorp on 9 April 2019, at Glaskasteel.

DCAS supports sports federations with funding. The funds should be used to develop and grow local sports talent in our communities. Let us continue to grow our sports talent BETTER TOGETHER.
