Oral History Initiative launched in Breede Valley by Minister Marais

16 October 2018

On Monday, 15 October 2018, the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, officially launched the Oral History Initiative in the Breede Valley Municipality in Worcester. The Oral History Initiative aims to capture and preserve the unique stories of communities within the Western Cape.

During the keynote address Minister Marais said, “Much of the history of our communities is preserved only in the minds of their storytellers. To truly understand our past from a unique perspective, this programme aims to record the valuable experiences beneath our social tapestry. While promoting social inclusion through sharing our stories, we can also ensure that personal histories and experiences are kept alive in communities and within government so that future generations can celebrate their heritage”.

Since its launch in 2015, the project has reached 23 communities across all 6 districts of the province, documenting 263 valuable interviews for posterity.

The launch will afford local community members a chance to share their personal stories at the following libraries in Worcester, De Doorns, Rawsonville, Touwsrivier and Zwelethemba.

Minister Marais calls on each citizen in the Western Cape to share their stories at their local participating libraries and wholeheartedly thanks all storytellers for sharing their oral histories with the Department. They have indeed contributed to our vison of a socially inclusive, connected and active Western Cape.
