Minister Anroux Marais' speech at SAFFA Youth Fly Fishing National Championship

11 October 2018

WESTERN CAPE MINISTER OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS AND SPORT, ANROUX MARAIS

SAFFA YOUTH FLY FHISHING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

6 OCTOBER 2018

Good evening, molweni, goeienaand,

It is indeed a great pleasure to address all participants, both local and from across the country, and this year, from the Czech Republic at the closing ceremony of the 2018 South African Fly Fishing Association Youth Fly Fishing National Championship in our beautiful Cape Winelands district this evening.

The 2018 SAFFA Nationals undoubtedly made a meaningful contribution to the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s mission to encourage excellence and inclusiveness in sport and culture through the effective, efficient and sustainable use of our resources, and through creative partnerships with others. In moving to excellence, we will create the conditions for access and mass participation, talent identification and skills development.

Sporting events, such as the SAFFA Nationals enable a socially inclusive, creative, active and connected Western Cape. It also affords visitors the opportunity to witness first-hand the splendor the Western Cape has to offer, while creating lifelong friendships with a healthy dose of competition and at the same time contributes to sport tourism in the area and its surroundings.

I encourage all participating anglers to enjoy the championship. Remember as Arnold Gingrich once said, “About the only certainty, other than uncertainty, in fly fishing is that a fly won’t catch a fish if it stays in its box. I sincerely thank each one of you for unboxing your flies in the Western Cape and we hope to see you all real soon again. We wish you well in your next competition and continued prosperity in being the positive role models to your fellow youth as you lead healthy lifestyles while increasing wellness through participation and excelling in the code.

I thank you.
