Sport Athletes Shine At Cape Winelands Sport Awards

13 August 2018

Sporting stars and their achievements from across the Cape Winelands region were celebrated at the Cape Winelands Sport Awards on 10 August 2018. The awards took place at the Mistico Equestrian Centre in Paarl, and were hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, in partnership with the Cape Winelands Sport Council and the Cape Winelands and Drakenstein Municipalities.

JP Naude, the president of the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation, reminded everyone that sport can connect people, and that it should be used to make a difference in people’s lives. “Tonight, all the nominees sitting here are the champions who have made a difference” said Naude.

Paul Hendricks, Director of Sport Development at DCAS congratulated all the nominees on their achievements and nominations. “The coaches need to develop our youth in a manner that speaks to the importance of sport, arts and culture, and what it can do for us” said Hendricks.

Cape Winelands Executive Mayor, Alderman von Schlicht delivered the keynote address at the awards, and highlighted some of the important characteristics of a successful athlete. “To all the athletes, coaches and administrators here, thank you for all your hard work, time, commitment and passion that enable all our sports people to succeed” she said.

These were the last of the regional awards and all the winners of the regional awards will now take part in the Provincial Sports Awards that will take place on 25 August 2018 at Mutual Park in Pinelands.
