Eden Sport Awards Honour Outstanding Athletes

The annual Eden Sports Awards honoured the hard-work and dedication to sport by athletes from the region on 27 July 2018. The awards took place at the Oudtshoorn Civic Centre on 27 July 2018, and were hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), and the Eden Sport Council, in partnership with the Oudtshoorn Municipality.

Oudtshoorn Executive Mayor, Alderman Colan Sylvester welcomed all nominees and guests to the awards, and spoke of the benefits of participating in sport, such as building relationships and character building. Alderman Sylvester said the awards were held celebrate the achievements of the Eden sportsmen and women. ‘Key to your achievements this year was not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win’ he said.

DCAS Chief Director of Sport and Recreation, Dr Lyndon Bouah said that the awards were a celebration and recognition of excellence in sport.  Dr Bouah spoke of the various sport programmes that DCAS offers to encourage a connected, active, creative and socially inclusive Western Cape. ‘I am inspired by the work that you do as volunteers to uplift your communities’ said Dr Bouah.

Ex-Springbok rugby play, Ashwin Willemse offered words of encouragement to all the athletes during the keynote address at the awards. “I am very humbled to see everyone here tonight. It is indicative of the appreciation of the journeys that all of the nominees have travelled throughout their lives and sporting careers’ said Willemse.

The Eden awards was the second of the regional sport awards events that are being held, with the Overberg awards taking place on 28 July 2018, the Central Karoo awards on 8 August 2018, the Cape Winelands awards on 10 August 2018. Winners from the regional awards will be nominees in the Provincial Sport Awards which takes place on 25 August 2018 at Mutual Park in Pinelands.
