Best of DCAS Drama at Suidooster on KykNET

20 July 2018

On 16 July 2018, the best actor, actress and director from the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) best of DCAS Drama Festival had the opportunity to star in supporting roles in South Africa’s popular soapie, Suidooster.

Stephren Saayman (19) from Riversdale and Brutney Singrew (20) from George won best actor and actress in their theatre plays which were part of the Suidooster Festival at the Artscape Theatre in April. They attended the workshops and festivals in their local communities as part of the DCAS drama talent identification in the province and came out as the top two. Charnelle Fortuin won in the best director category and got the opportunity to shadow the soapie’s director for the day. As part of their prize, these promising actors got the opportunity to showcase their talents on an actual drama series. The recording took place at the Atlantic Studios in Montague Gardens.

Both actors were very nervous but under the guidance of director Romano Gorlei the pair executed their roles effortlessly.  Their scene took place in the Oos-wes coffee shop.

Stephren said, “This opportunity made me realise that dreams can only turn into a reality through hard work and determination. This is a great platform for upcoming artists thanks to the support of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.”

Brutney said that the opportunity made her realise how precious their talent is and that you need to work hard to achieve your dreams. ”I realise that hard work pays off in the end and I am grateful for the opportunity that was given to me.”

According to upcoming director Charnelle the opportunity made her realise that acting is not the only option. ”Even though I love acting, the excitement I felt while I helped with directing, made me realise that I want to be so much more. It also made me realise that I can be so much more.” she said.

Communities should use these opportunities to empower themselves. Let us nurture the talent of our youth and support them to become self-sustainable artists. BETTER TOGETHER.
