DCAS Invests In Aspiring Writers

19 July 2018

The Script Development Initiative hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), was concluded during the weekend of 14 July 2018. Scriptwriters from drama groups that applied to take part in the DCAS 2018/19 drama festival, took part in the initiative.

DCAS also hosted the Eden and Cape Winelands Drama festival. It is the first time that these two district workshops had been combined into one development workshop that was facilitated by the Baxter Theatre’s Zabalaza Festival coordinators. Facilitators included Nwabisa Plaatjie, Khayalethu Anthony, Lauren Hannie and Zoleka Helesi. They gave the participants valuable input which assisted them with the preparation of their showcases. Youth came from as far as Barrydale, Franschhoek, Plettenberg Bay and Dysselsdorp to attend the weekend workshop.

Gaireyah Fredericks said,” I have been with the programme for three years and the approach this time around has been the best ever. The skills I’ve learnt this weekend will make me relook my previous scripts to ensure I get the best out of my work.”

All the writers will now return to their groups and present their updated scripts and prepare for the showcases that will take place on 25 August 2018 and 1 September 2018 in Cape Winelands and on 8,14 and 15 September 2018 in Eden.

DCAS identifies talent in our communities. Let us continue to develop excellence in the arts BETTER TOGETHER.
