Minister Anroux Marais Invests R6 985 277 In Sport Promotion And Development

2 May 2018

On 2 May 2018, Minister Anroux Marais handed over a total of R6 985 277 in funding to the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation (WCPSC). This ceremonial cheque handover was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and took place at the DCAS head office.

Acting Chief Director for Sport and Recreation, Paul Hendricks welcomed all attendees and explained the valued partnership between DCAS and the WCPSC. The Confederation is a non-governmental, non-profit making governing body which is affiliated to SASCOC.

Minister Marais highlighted the value of investing in sport promotion and development when she handed over an amount of R5,4m that is allocated for the Provincial Sport Academy, District Sport Academies and Sport Focus Schools. The funding will be supporting athletes in the academy system and will provide specialised support in mass screening programmes, basic specific scientific testing, sport science, medical service, capacity building, nutrition, life skills, sport specific skills coaching, etc. DCAS has also allocated an amount of R1 585 277 to the Cape Town Sport Council, Cape Winelands Sport Council, West Coast Sport Council, Central Karoo Sport Council, Overberg Sport Council, Eden Sport Council, WCPSC, DISWEC, Western Cape Farmworkers and Western Cape Federations. This allocation will be used to contribute towards social inclusion and to encourage especially people from disadvantaged communities to participate in sports.

Mr JP Naude, the Chairperson of the WCPSC, has just returned from the International Karate Friendship Tournament in Tokyo and explained the significant difference that funding makes for people to compete on the highest level. He concluded the ceremony and thanked Minister Marais and DCAS for making it possible for federations to assist and grow local sport.

DCAS supports sporting federations through funding across the province. It is important that communities support their local sports teams and encourage participation and growth. Let us grow our sporting talent, BETTER TOGETHER.
