Overberg Sport Federations Receive DCAS Funding

19 April 2018

On Wednesday, 18 April 2018, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) hosted the annual cheque handover ceremony in Grabouw, where Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais handed over funding for the new financial year to representatives of various Overberg Sport federations.

A total of R435 000 was handed over from DCAS to the federations of this region, to assist them with their activities for the 2018/19 year. Bennett Bailey, Deputy Director: Sport Promotion, opened the evening, where after Mayor Vosloo, Executive Mayor for Theewaterskloof, officially welcomed everyone to the event. “The route to a healthy spirit is a healthy body, and that is why we passionately promote sport in our region.” Mayor Vosloo said.

Dr. Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director: Sport and Recreation, reminded the federations of the importance of signing the Memorandum of Agreement that grants them the funding, and also ensuring that the funds are spent in line with the MOA stipulations.

Minister Marais emphasized the role of sport in creating social inclusion in communities, but also the important role it plays for younger people: “The youth want a sense of belonging and that is what we offer them through various sporting codes in communities. We must plant seeds of hope in our communities by supporting sporting talent.” Minister Marais said.

This was one of six cheque handovers that are taking place across the province. The next handover will take place in Wellington on 19 April 2018, where federations in the Cape Winelands region will receive their funding.

DCAS supports sporting activities across the province through financial support to sporting federations. These funds should be used to grow and encourage sporting excellence. Let us support our sporting talent BETTER TOGETHER.
