Minister Meyer Hands over Cheque to Bergrivier Municipality

22 May 2012

On 23 May, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, handed over a cheque of R2 934 000 to the Bergrivier Municipality. The aim of this funding is to supplement municipal investment into library services and to sustain the future professional delivery and development of such services in the municipality.

Receiving the cheque on behalf of the Bergrivier Municipality, Mr Evert Manuel, Mayor of Piketberg, thanked the minister and said that the money is certainly a "big financial injection and that it will certainly enhance the quality of library services rendered to communities within the municipality".

Dr Ivan Meyer thanked all those who attended the cheque handover and stated that the goal was to support the most vulnerable libraries in whatever ways there are. He expressed his gratitude to the municipality for not closing down the library as others have done and that it carried on rendering this valuable service. He especially thanked Mrs Linda Mabindisa, Assistant Director within the Municipal Replacement Fund Unit, for her role in ensuring that the funds that libraries receive are used wisely by the libraries.

Community leader, Raven Ray, thanked the minister on behalf of the town's people for the provincial government's generous support and assured the minister that it was much needed as the library used on daily by the learners attending the local school. Librarian Ms Sandra Crafford expressed her gratitude saying that that the library and her work was her passion.

Minister Meyer also conveyed a heartfelt thank you to the staff and local municipality saying that the success of the library is enabled through services that are delivered within the context of the Western Cape Government's philosophy of "better together".
