On 14 December 2017, thirteen sports legends were awarded and recognised for their contributions to sports and their impact on the lives of people around them. The Sport Legends event was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports and took place at Kronenburg Estate in Paarl.
The legends attending the event were from the various regions of the Western Cape and have played significant roles in shaping sport in their communities. Legends in various codes, including athletics, equestrian sport, sailing and sport for people with disabilities were honoured.
Cape Winelands Mayoral Committee member, Councillor Lodewyk Niehaus, thanked the legends for all that they have done for the development of sport.
DCAS Head of Department, Brent Walters, officially opened the ceremony and welcomed all guests to the 13th edition of the Legends ceremony. “This morning we honour our own living legends…often these legends are unsung heroes and heroines who have given up years of their lives, in time and effort, to ensure that we build a better society.” said Mr Walters.
For the first time, the ceremony also included a story-telling session, where all the legends were able to share their rich histories and experiences with guests. Only by listening to these stories are we able to understand how sport and sport legends have helped positively shape society and our lives.
Minister Anroux Marais spoke of the importance of the Oral History programme and the importance of sharing our histories. The Minister added that the ceremony is a highlight of the DCAS calendar, where the department can celebrate sporting icons. “The awards aim to honour sports people in identified sport codes for the role they have played in ensuring the growth, development and transformation of sport during difficult circumstances.” said Minister Marais.
For ease of reference, the speech delivered by Minister Marais and the names and background information of the 2017 legends can be found online.
Dr Lyndon Boauh, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation for DCAS, explained the process involved in choosing the legends who were honoured. “This morning’s ceremony is a joyous celebration of your lives, and we thank you for that.” said Dr Bouah to all the legends.
DCAS continues to promote an inclusive Western Cape. Let us celebrate our diversity and achievements BETTER TOGETHER.
