On 29 November 2017 the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) partnered with the Hermanus Community Day Centre (CDC) in creating awareness of living a healthy lifestyle if you are diabetic.
During November, national Diabetes Awareness Month, DCAS Sport Promotion presented “Move Your body” sessions to patients at the centre in the Overberg who were classified as having diabetes. Neil Naidoo and Olivia Carolisen from the Provincial Gymnasium demonstrated exercises that patients can do in the comfort of their homes to help them live a healthier lifestyle. “It was a pleasure to work with the patients at the centre. They come from economically challenged backgrounds and we could impact their health and wellness for the better,” said Neil. The sessions were well received and participation was great. They received firsthand information on the importance of eating healthy and maintaining a healthy lifestyle when living with diabetes.
CDC dietician Amelia Williams thanked DCAS for their supportive contribution. “They made a real difference in the lives of the patients”, she said. Some participants said it was the highlight of their day and requests were made for similar sessions in future. Amelia encouraged patients to eat healthy and avoid becoming diabetic.
“We believe that we made a significant impact by creating awareness of the importance of living healthy and exercising,” said DCAS Sport Promotion Officer Agnetha Langenhoven.
DCAS promotes healthy lifestyles through its activities across the province. Let us invest in active and healthy communities in the Western Cape, BETTER TOGETHER.
