Minister Meyer Announces New Members of Western Cape Cultural Commission

6 June 2012

On 7 June, Dr Ivan Meyer, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, announced the new members of the Western Cape Cultural Commission (WCCC) at the Head Office of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport. The Cultural Commission is formed in terms of the Western Cape Cultural Commission and the Cultural Councils Act, Act 14 of 1998.

The role of the commission is to advise the minister on the preservation, promotion and development of arts and culture in the province. The goal of the commission is to promote the cultural landscape across the various geographical and cultural landscapes. According to the minister, the WCCC members are to concentrate "creating cultural warmth in the community". He admitted to thoroughly investigating each and every one of the possible candidates and that choices were therefore based on excellence. These candidates stand fit to contribute to the cultural landscape and will give their utmost best in doing so.

Mr Mervin Smith, the newly elected chairperson of the Western Cape Cultural Commission, stated that they will most definitely deliver on their statutory duties. He also thanked the minister for his hand in promotion. Mr Willa Boezak, Deputy Chairperson, vigorously agreed about extending a hand of cultural warmth to the community.

From here on forth, the WCCC will support the minister and the department to enhance the cultural landscape of the Western Cape.
