Women at tea party share their experiences at the SA Fisheries Museum

On 9 August 2017 a Women’s Day tea party was hosted in partnership with the Friends of the Museum at the South African Fisheries Museum in Velddrif.

Team leaders and supervisors from the local Amawandle Pelagic fish factory participated in the celebrations and were exposed to a tour through the museum and shared experiences and anecdotes from their social and working environments with each other over a cup of tea and refreshments.

Tina Williams started working at the fish factory at the tender age of 14 in 1969. She remembers a time in the factory’s history when the siren called the workers any time of the day or night. Everybody would dutifully report for work as the trawlers brought in their catches of fish, even sometimes leaving the dance floor on a Saturday night.

Some of the ladies dressed up in traditional wear for the tea party and enjoyed sharing their fascinating explanations about the dignified meaning of their cultural heritage.
