The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), the Overberg Sport Council and the Theewaterskloof Municipality hosted the 3rd annual Overberg Sport Awards at the Victoria Hall in Caledon on 29 July 2017.
Athletes from across the Overberg district were awarded for their efforts in their respective sporting codes in 20 different categories. Winners of the respective regional awards will be nominees at the Western Cape Provincial Sports Awards towards the end of this year. The winners of the Provincial Awards will be put forward as nominees at the South African Sport Awards.
Deputy Mayor of Theewaterskloof Municipality, Isaac Sileku extended a warm welcome to the attendees of the prestigious event. He also wished the winners well and reminded the athletes to be role models in their community. “I want to congratulate the athletes that are receiving accolades. You’ve worked hard and today you reap the fruits of your dedication. Remember to be a good role model to the youth in your community so that they can be inspired by your sporting achievements,” said Sileku.
The keynote address was delivered by the Chief Director of Sport and Recreation, Dr Lyndon Bouah. He emphasised a number of the sporting accomplishments in the Overberg region which includes the building of a hockey Astroturf in Hermanus and the development of the Overberg Sport Academy in Bredasdorp. “Tonight we are celebrating our athletes. All of you that have been nominated are winners because you have excelled in your sport code,” concluded Dr Bouah.
The Metro District Sport Awards will take place in Cape Town on 31 July and the Cape Winelands Sport Awards will take place on 3 August in Wellington.
The Sport Awards acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our sports people. Let us continue to grow and nurture our sporting talent in our province BETTER TOGETHER.
