DCAS Drama Festival Winners Showcase their Talent on Suidooster

12 July 2017

On 10 July 2017, the best actor and actress from the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport’s (DCAS) Tridistrict Drama Festival had the opportunity to star in supporting roles in South Africa’s popular soapie, Suidooster.

Aden October (14) from Swellendam and Karabo Salman (16) from Robertson won best actor and actress in their theatre plays which were part of the Suidooster Festival at the Artscape Theatre in April. They attended the workshops and festivals in their local communities as part of the DCAS drama talent identification in the province and came out as the top two.

As part of their prize, these promising actors got the opportunity to showcase their talents on an actual drama series. The recording took place at the Atlantic Studios in Montague Gardens.

Both actors were very nervous but with the guidance of director Romano Gorlei and other staff members the pair executed their roles effortlessly.  Both their scenes were recorded in the Oos Wes Coffee Shop where Aden played the role of a waiter and Karabo the role of a disgruntled customer.

Karabo is proof of the saying that dynamite comes in small packages. The grade 11 Masakheke High School learner was very excited and honored to be part of the series. “I was very overwhelmed to be chosen as best actress.  It was a last minute decision that I would portray the lead role in our play, Question Mark. It was quite a challenge but I worked hard to portray the role to my full potential”.

Aden October says that Drama is his passion, as he can use it to deal in a positive manner with tough issues in his community such as drug and alcohol abuse. He is a grade 9 learner at Swellendam Secondary School. “The Suidooster experience was a dream come true. I learnt so much about all the effort that goes into producing a show such as Suidooster”.

Communities should use these opportunities to empower themselves. Let us nurture the talent of our youth and support them to become self-sustainable artists, BETTER TOGETHER.
