Olympic fun at Bokmakierie Holiday Programme

5 July 2017

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) hosted an Olympic School Holiday Programme at Bokmakierie Primary School in Athlone on 4 July 2017.

Approximately 50 children aged 9 to 15 from the local community were treated with an interactive session informing them about the history and values of the Olympics, and the meaning of the five circles in the Olympic logo. Issues facing youngsters, such as the negative impact of drug and alcohol abuse on their lives, were also addressed.

During her presentation Ronel Johnathan from DCAS Sport Promotion explained that even though the community is affected by many social ills, youth should use opportunities available for them to become active citizens. “It is important to have a positive attitude towards life.” she emphasised.

The programme was concluded with an activity to show how everyone can implement the Olympic Values in their daily lives. The values of the Olympic Games are excellence, friendship, respect, Olympism, joy of effort, fair play, respect for others, pursuit of excellence and balance between body, will and mind.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the programme. Dayaan Arendse (12) from Bokmakierie Primary School said: “It was nice to learn about the Olympics. I will always try to use the Olympic values when playing sport”.

Let us continue to encourage our youth to take part in sport, to build a healthier and stronger Western Cape, BETTER TOGETHER.
