Overberg District Sporting Federations Receive R360 000 In Funding

6 April 2017

On Wednesday, 5 April 2017, Minister Anroux Marais handed over a total of R360 000 in funding to sporting federations in the Overberg District. This is part of the funding that the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) commits to the federations to support talent identification and development across the province.

Deputy Director of Sport Promotion, Bennett Bailey, welcomed the representatives from the federations and gave an overview of how the funding process works.

Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation, spoke about the department’s vision of empowering sport federations in order for them to perform well. He also said that the department will engage closely with the federations to offer support.

Minister Marais emphasized the need for sporting opportunities in communities, especially for the youth. “This funding will assist federations to increase the pool of sporting talent at grassroots level. Sport plays an important role in keeping youth away from social ills and we must encourage the youth to participate.” she said.

Rudolph Johannes from the Overberg District Sport Council thanked DCAS and Minister Marais for the support to their sporting federations.

Following on her budget speech on 29 March 2017, Minister Marais is travelling to all six districts to hand over funding to each district. On Monday, 3 April 2017 she handed over funding (R120 000) to federations in the Central Karoo region and on Tuesday, 4 April she handed over R1 450 000 to federations in the Eden district.

DCAS provides support through funding to sporting federations across the province. Communities should support their local sport teams and encourage participation and growth. Let us grow our sporting talent BETTER TOGETHER.
