Embracing Inclusivity with the 2016/17 Cultural Affairs Awards

27 March 2017

It was a night of theatrics, music and a touch of nostalgia as the 2016/17 Cultural Affairs Awards were presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) at the Lord Charles Hotel on Saturday, 25 March 2017.

The theme of the awards, Embrace Inclusivity, was displayed from the moment guests entered the venue, with the sounds of marimbas filling the entrance-way as various mimes entertained and welcomed them.

Head of Department Brent Walters welcomed guests and emphasized the importance of the awards within the province: “Cultural diversity is our strength and tonight we celebrate the best our province has to offer. Our DCAS vision and provincial values adequately demonstrate that, through these awards, we embrace our shared heritage.” he said.

Minister Anroux Marais also spoke about the importance of the awards in embracing diversity: “The awards bestowed on deserving nominees this evening, provide an opportunity to proudly showcase the diversity of the cultural landscapes of the Western Cape and those who work tirelessly to make this possible. The Western Cape would not be the same without our unique culture and that is why we celebrate it by recognizing those who keep it alive.” she said.

The Masters of Ceremonies, Martelize Brink and Ayanda Dlamini, did an excellent job of keeping the guests entertained throughout the evening. Guests were treated to performances by performance poets, dancers, the amazing sounds of the musical duo Acoustic Element and a magician from the College of Magic. The evening was crowned by a special performance by Terry Fortune, who also received a Ministerial Award for National and International contribution to Cultural Affairs.
