On Wednesday, 1 March 2017 the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), in partnership with the Cape Town Sport Council and the City of Cape Town, hosted the Cape Town regional Sport Awards.
This event honoured the achievements of athletes in the Metro region over the past year. Richard Buckley, Chairperson of the Cape Town Sport Council, opened the evening by welcoming all the athletes present. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation at DCAS, who emphasized the vision of the department to build an active province. He also stressed the importance of sporting programmes at school level to develop athletes: “We believe that when you give people opportunities, they will discover what their passion is and they will thrive.” he said.
Honoured guests included Olympian and Paralympian athletes who competed at the Rio Olympics and Paralympics in 2016. The evening ended with the announcement of the winners of the Sportsman- and Sportswoman of the Year categories – this year these titles were awarded to Juan de Jongh (Western Province Rugby) and Dominique Scott (Western Province Athletics) respectively.
The winners of the regional sport awards will move on to be nominated for the Provincial Sport Awards which will take place later this year.
