On 11 February 2017 the Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, officiated at the symbolic 27 for Freedom race in Paarl.
The race commemorates the 27th anniversary of the historic release from prison of the late Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa.
The Drakenstein Correctional Services worked together with the Western Cape Government, local municipalities and other stakeholders to make it possible for participants to step into Madiba’s historical footsteps on the exact date he became a free person in 1990. Participants also followed the same route that marked Mandela’s walk to freedom.
The 27km run and 10 and 5km fun run/walk were followed by top quality entertainment that included learners from DCAS MOD Centres and other exciting activities. The discreet presence of 87-year old Ahmed Kathrada reminded the crowd of the commitments of the stalwarts who contributed to our democracy. Finally John Fredericks, the man whose life inspired the acclaimed movie Noem my Skollie, intrigued the audience with his humble motivational speech.
Minister Marais said we are honoured to follow in the footsteps of Madiba where he started to pave the way that led to the building of a democratic society. She said it is “a small step in the eyes of many, yet a giant leap for all South Africans and the world at large.”
DCAS proudly supports holistic healthy lifestyles and encourages communities to commemorate our valuable heritage. Let’s start building an appreciative and active nation, Better Together.
