West Coast Municipality Receives Sporting Equipment From Minister Marais

1 November 2016

Yesterday, 31 October 2016, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais officially handed over sporting equipment in the West Coast District Municipality.

The communities of Piketberg and Vanrhyndorp received chess tables at their public libraries. The chess table handovers was made possible by the partnership of all three spheres of government working better together.

The collaborative effort includes the National Correctional Service, as the inmates hand-made the chess boards; the provincial Cultural Affairs and Sport department as co-ordinator and funder, and the Bergriver and Matizikama municipalities who will maintain the sets.

These handovers form part of the department’s goal to encourage each library in the Western Cape to provide access to the game of chess.

At the handover, Minister Marais said, “The game of chess is not only a sporting activity played to pass time by quietly, but it also incorporates valuable life lessons. It teaches us to have a plan, make a move and take personal responsibility for the move. Importantly, each move has consequences. It also teaches us that no matter how the opponent tries to push us into a certain position, the decision is always ours to make”. Together with the Executive Mayor of the Matizikama municipality, Rhenda Stephan, the learners of Maskam Primary School happily welcomed the chess tables presented to Vanrhynsdorp Library (see attached photo).

Minister Marais also surprised the learners of Spruitdrift Primary School in Vredendal during interval with the sporting equipment needed to participate in the codes of soccer, rugby, netball and basketball. The learners excitedly welcomed the soccer, netball, rugby and basketballs. They are committed to developing their sporting skills to represent Vredendal and the province at higher levels of competition. Photographs are available upon request.

Following previous visits and requests from the communities, Minister Marais returned to West Coast College and handed over much needed sporting equipment. Photographs of this handover is also available upon request.
