Mountaineers Basketball Team Jets Off To Johannesburg

26 August 2016

With big smiles on their faces portraying their immense pride and enthusiasm, the Western Cape Mountaineers Basketball Team was officially honoured by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) on Thursday, 25 August 2016 in Cape Town.

The club will be representing the Western Cape at the National League Series taking place from 26 August 2016 to 5 November 2016.

Craig Daniels, the head coach of the team, expressed how proud he is of his team and his excitement for the challenge ahead. “The guys have really worked hard this season, and today just further motivates us to achieve better than last year”. Player Stephen Gabriel said that he realises that his team is under a lot of pressure but he is enjoying the process and sport of basketball nonetheless. “We are very excited about this tournament and to go play in Johannesburg. We all have our own dreams that we hope to achieve over there. Last year we managed to achieve a top four spot, so this year we are hoping to top that”, he said.

Minister Anroux Marais addressed the team and said that she is especially proud to be afforded the opportunity to personally meet the team who will be representing our province on a national sporting stage in the sport of basketball. “I take this opportunity to thank you for your commitment to the game and for promoting it through your excellence”, she said. “You each come from different communities and knowingly or unknowingly, there is someone looking up to you as you have made positive choices to enrich yourself through sport and your interest in basketball has inspired another to do the same, even if it is only one person. The journey of a thousand miles usually starts with a single step”, said Minister Marais.

DCAS aims to promote and increase the profile of Basketball in the Western Cape by creating an enabling, sustainable and effective environment for the delivery of mass participation in the code, BETTER TOGETHER.
