Olympic Values Highlighted at Olympic Day Roadshow in Kleinmond

16 May 2016

The history and values of the Olympics were the main focus of the first Olympic Day Roadshow that took place in Kleinmond on 14 May 2016. The roadshow was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport and supported by various sporting federations.

Approximately 50 children from the Kleinmond area attended the roadshow. They learnt everything about the Olympics, from the very first Olympics to the meaning of the five circles in the Olympic logo. Issues facing youngsters, such as the negative impact of drug and alcohol abuse on their lives, were also addressed.

They also had the opportunity to meet paralympian Hilton Langenhoven who spoke to them about what it takes to be a paralympic champion. Hilton said that it was an honour to be there and inspire the youngsters. He explained that even though he had a disadvantage, he used opportunities presented to him to become who he is today. “It is important to respect each other and have a positive attitude towards life.” he said.

Bennet Bailey of DCAS presented the history of the Olympic Games, stretching all the way back to the very first Olympic Games to the young children and the role sports can play in their lives. “The most important thing to remember is to enjoy sport,” said Bailey.

The torch was lit and it will travel across the province to the various roadshows in the Western Cape.

Let us continue to encourage our youth to take part in sport, to build a healthier and stronger Western Cape, BETTER TOGETHER.
