Legends Honoured For Their Significant Roles In Sport

14 December 2015

On Friday, 11 December 2015, sporting legends were honoured at the 11th annual Sport Legends Awards at the Nelson Creek Estate in Wellington.

These prestigious awards took place in honour of certain individuals who played a significant role in sport and deserve to be acknowledged. Thirty-seven legends from various districts in the Western Cape were honoured. The sport codes included athletics, rugby, swimming, bowls, golf, judo, softball, badminton, disability sport, sailing, netball, softball, tennis and boxing.

Brent Walters, Head of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), quoted from Sir Terry Pratchett’s book I Shall Wear Midnight, in his speech when talking about the importance of honouring the stories of our past: “It is important that we know where we come from, because if you do not know where you come from, then you don't know where you are, and if you don't know where you are, you don't know where you're going. And if you don't know where you're going, you're probably going wrong.”

DCAS Minister Anroux Marais encouraged the Legends to keep up their good work. She said: “It gives me great pleasure to be here today. We have identified sport activists and within determined codes we are acknowledging them. The purpose of the Sport Legends Awards is to develop a feeling of achievement in communities and to identify sport role models to show that achievement and excellence are possible in tough and testing times. Today we celebrate and give recognition to those persons who made a significant contribution to sport, those persons who are seen as icons in their communities. If you are receiving a reward today, you are a beacon of hope.”

DCAS continues to promote an inclusive Western Cape. Let us celebrate our diversity and achievements BETTER TOGETHER.
