Eden Drama Festival Finale Celebrates its Fifth Anniversary with a Bang

2 December 2015

Over the past weekend the Garden Route ensured that they boasted with all the local talent they could possibly find at the Eden Drama Festival Finale in George.

The event, held on Saturday 28 November, was hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in collaboration with the George Arts Society, the Zabalaza Festival at the Baxter Theatre, Absa KKNK, the George Municipality, the Knysna Municipality, the Lunchbox Theatre and the Oudtshoorn Municipality.

Confidently and enthusiastically seven talented groups participated, and Team Explosive in their performance of Affie Kleinplaas proved to their audience and the judges that they are worthy of representing the Eden District at the Suidoosterfees next year in May. It was decided that second place would be awarded to Genagetix Productions after their performance of Andrea. These two groups, the Unexpected Drama Group performing Verlede op die Agtergrond, as well as the winning groups and runners-up from the Overberg and Cape Winelands districts, will also be performing at the Zabalaza Festival at the Baxter Theatre next year in March.

Director of Arts, Culture and Language, Jane Moleleki, welcomed everyone in attendance and thanked the partners and stakeholders who not only believed in the concept but also believed in developing the youth of Eden as well. “Well done to the youth for showing great commitment with this programme over the five years, showing the hunger and need to better themselves with the arts and through the arts.”

Through partners and stakeholders’ input, R17 000 worth of prizes was awarded to the winning participants in all the different categories. The overall winning team, Team Explosive, won a R10 000 prize from Absa KKNK as well as their own date and venue to showcase their winning production during next year’s festival.

DCAS supports young artists to showcase and develop their talents. Communities should encourage their young people to get involved in arts and culture. Let us develop our country’s dramatic talent BETTER TOGETHER.
