U/12 Soccer Team Wins Soccer Tournament At MOD Centre

16 November 2015

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), and the Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) Programme in partnership with Chevrolet and the Dreamfields Project hosted a soccer tournament at the Saxonsea MOD centre.

According to coach Tashwell Adams, who has been coaching at Saxonsea Primary MOD Centre for eight years, the purpose of the event was to help children dream big, cherish their dreams and supply them with soccer kits, including boots, shin guards, gear, socks and balls.

The event took place at the Atlantis Multipurpose Centre Soccer Fields on Saturday 31 October 2015. There were ten different schools participating from Atlantis and surrounding areas. It catered specifically for the u/12 boys with 70% of the team still being under 11 years old.

Adams said the boys were still very young and that it paints a clear picture of the depth and advantage these youngsters have, due to the fact that they attended the sessions at the MOD Centre. “Roy-Keane du Plessis, for example, is a grade 6 learner at Saxonsea Primary who has a positive heart and mind, he easily influences his teammates, is our captain and a skilful player, but also the top goal scorer in our local schools soccer league. Even at his age, he already knows how to guide and mentor his teammates. I am very proud of these youngsters and I always tell them: ‘if it does not challenge you, it does not change you’,” Adams said.

DCAS and the MOD centres help to equip young people with the necessary skills required to make a bright future a reality.
