Eden District Sports Awards Highlights Outstanding Athletic Achievements

9 November 2015

Athletes from various sporting codes in the Eden District were once again given the opportunity to be awarded for their outstanding performances this year at the Eden District Sports Awards on Friday 6 November 2015.

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), in partnership with the George Municipality and the Eden Sport Council, hosted this annual awards evening at the George Civic Centre, which celebrates the achievements of athletes participating in rugby, chess, golf and various other sporting codes.

The evening aimed to showcase the athletes and their outstanding achievements. Guest speaker Elana Meyer, a world renowned athlete, motivated the athletes to remain eager and determined to always give their best.

Chairperson of the Eden Sport Council, Desmond Speelman, welcomed everyone present on behalf of the Council, congratulated the athletes and extended his warm welcome and great appreciation to everyone present. He emphasised the hard work of the athletes receiving awards on this special evening and described them as “the most important people of the evening”.

He said: “Without your hard work, commitment and achievements over the past year, this event would not be possible. Tonight at this joyous, prestigious occasion, we are celebrating excellence in sport. Tonight you will be awarded for your hard work, determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort. You have never given up on your dream. You are true champions of your game and you have never given less than 100% in everything you do.”

DCAS and its partners will continue to support athletes in their goals, giving them the necessary support to continue growing in all their sporting endeavours in the Western Cape BETTER TOGETHER.

The Eden District Sports Awards was the first of four awards ceremonies. The next sports awards are Overberg on 13 November 2015, Cape Winelands on 19 November 2015 and Central Karoo on 27 November 2015.
