Athlete Intake at Eden District Sport Academy

19 October 2015

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport in partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation (WCPSC) and the Eden District Sport Academy hosted the second intake of athletes into the Eden District Sport Academy on 17 October 2015.

Seventy-eight excited athletes were inducted into the District Sport Academy. The first intake of athletes took place during January 2014. The sport codes of the Academy are football, baseball, netball, swimming/aquatics, cycling, boxing, table tennis, athletics and school sports.

Since its first intake, the Academy has offered an array of services, which have been supporting these athletes throughout the year. The services offered by the Academy include, among other things, living expenses (transport to training sessions and meals), medical assessments, psychological assessments and intervention, technological support and interventions, life skills and career counselling and guidance information services.

Caleb Pinn (17), an athlete from Eden Baseball, said he is privileged to be part of something that he has always wanted. “It’s opening up doors for me and it exposes me to the kind of experience necessary to develop as a player and in my personal life. Baseball is a big thing in my life and the sport keeps me away from bad things.”

Athletes of the Eden District will have the opportunity to demonstrate their talent and will vie for a place in the Eden District Sport Academy, which will offer them the support they need to continue their road to success.
