DCAS Invests in Youth During Winter School Holidays

On Thursday, 25 June 2015, the Western Cape Government announced a fun-filled activity programme for learners at its MOD (Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth) Programme Centres. From Monday 29 June until Friday 10 July 2015, learners will be able to play a variety of sports, indigenous games and chess at selected MOD Centres in rural parts of the province.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) started the MOD Programme five years ago in partnership with schools and communities. The Programme provides learners with a safe place after school where they can play sport, participate in cultural activities and study.

This winter, holiday programme activities include football, netball, cricket, tag rugby, volleyball, tennis, table tennis and basketball. Chess and cultural or indigenous games are also on offer at certain schools. The complete schedule is available online.

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Anroux Marais encouraged parents to send their school going children to participate in these MOD Centre activities. Experience shows that keeping children engaged in constructive activities reduces the risk that they will become involved in anti-social and risky behaviour. She said young people have a responsibility for their own future by making positive choices which will improve their long-term physical well-being.

The Western Cape Government wishes all the young people of the province a pleasant and safe holiday and expresses the hope that they will return ready to tackle the second half of the 2015 school year.
