Learners Enjoy New Travelling Toy Exhibition

25 May 2015

On Friday, 22 May, the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais, opened a new travelling museum exhibition with the theme “Toys and Memory”.

The exhibition shows what toys children of the Western Cape play with and played with in the past. It consists of various components, including a miniature train track with moving trains, a variety of dolls and older toys like slingshots. Children can interact with the exhibition to experience some of the toys that they might not be familiar with.

A group of learners who take part in the department’s Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth (MOD) programme were also inivited to the opening and were given the chance to try out some of the toys. Chief Director for Cultural Affairs, Hannetjie du Preez, said that the exhibition is aimed at children as well as adults and she invited the learners present to share their experiences and current toys with the department. The learners especially enjoyed playing with some of the older toys.

Head of Department Brent Walters emphasised the importance of museums and exhibitions. “Exhibitions such as these create a sense of of belonging for people in the province.  It is also important for people to gain an understanding of the past so that we can better understand our future.” he said.

Minister Marais said that museums play a big role in the telling of individuals’ stories. “People must tell their stories so that we can explore our common identity. It is important that people are given the space to share their memories and tell their stories.” she said.

DCAS continues to develop more exhibitions in order for communities to have their stories told. Communities should support their museums in order for these memories to be preserved. Let us continue to preserve the province’s shared memories BETTER TOGETHER.
