Successful Visual Arts Programme Inspires Koekenaap Learners

23 December 2014

A visual arts programme for primary school learners inspired the creativity of 30 Koekenaap youngsters in November and December 2014. These learning events were organised by the Arts and Culture component of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in partnership with the Koekenaap VGK Primary school. The facilitator was Desireé Brand, a highly qualified visual artist from the Matzikama region.

Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon in November 2014, 30 participating learners from Grades 4, 5 and 6 stayed after school for art lessons. The programme began with pencil sketching of vases, faces and landscapes.

A total of 25 of the learners attended a further two-week workshop at the Koekenaap Cultural Facility between 1 and 12 December. Here they learned to use acrylic paints, did clay modelling and started creating sculptures.

The children’s interest in, and appreciation for the arts has been enhanced. As they grow up, some of them are expected to become accomplished artists of the region.

This programme with key stakeholders and enthusiastic children has helped to create an enabling environment for a sense of community pride in Matzikama. Let us nurture, develop and enhance the arts, BETTER TOGETHER.
