Children's reading celebrations at Museum a big success

12 December 2014

The three official languages of the Western Cape were celebrated at a reading and storytelling event in Cape Town on 10 December 2014. This partnership between the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and the Cape Medical Museum ended the 16 Days of Activism Campaign Against Gender-based Violence on a high note. Learners from Grades 4 to 7 who participate in DCAS after hours reading clubs came from Hillwood Primary School in Lavender Hill and Isiphiwo Primary School in Khayelitsha to show off their skills.

The learners read books of their choice in their mother tongues; good stories full of creative expression to stimulate the imagination. Story sparkers from Nal’ibali national reading campaign created a vibrant mood by telling stories to create awareness about woman and child abuse.

The event concluded with a tour of the museum with its many fascinating artefacts. The learners thanked DCAS Language Services for running book clubs in their schools. Proud children showed off excellent end-of-year school results. They said that the book clubs played an important role in enabling them to achieve such good results.
