Athletes Get Words of Encouragement at School Championship Opening

National Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula welcomed participants to the South African National Schools Championships (SANSC) in Pretoria on 10 December 2014. Mbalula stressed the importance of school sport being the bedrock of sport in our country: “Todays athletes are tomorrow’s legends”, he said. 

The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, also attended the opening ceremony and spent some time with the Western Cape athletes to wish them well. All nine provinces will be represented with team Western Cape sending its largest contingent to date to the championships - they will be taking part in all 18 sport codes. 

Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Enver Surty also stressed the importance of the partnership between Department of Basic Education and Sports and Recreation South Africa to ensure the smooth implementation of the school sport programme. The championships will kick off today with team Western Cape looking to put their best foot forward.
