Top West Coast Athletes Honoured

18 November 2014

The West Coast Sport Awards event took place in Langebaan on Friday, 14 November 2014. Top sportsmen and women in sport codes such as kickboxing, cricket, cycling, athletics and angling were honoured in 23 categories on the night.

The event was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in partnership with West Coast Sports Council and the Saldanha Bay Municipality. Mayor Francois Schippers wished the winners well. “These are rewards for your hard work over the last year,” he said.

Bennett Bailey from the DCAS Sport Promotion directorate said: “For all those who were recognised tonight, always remain humble. Tonight’s awards are not just about winners, they are about celebrating the universality of Olympism”.

Sportswoman of the Year Elsabé Campbell was elated after receiving her accolade. She has been angling for 13 years and been a part of the South African shore angling team since 2008. “Many people think what we do look easy, but it’s hard work. We need to walk long distances and are often exposed to bad weather when angling. You need to be passionate about what you do and be cognisant of the conservation of marine life.”

Athletes from West Coast Kickboxing received many awards: School Sportsman of the Year; School Sportswoman of the Year; Junior Sports Woman of the Year; Coach of the Year; the Riaan Loots Award as well as three Presidential Awards.

Johan Muller, president of the West Coast Sports Council, said, “We wish our winners all the best for the Provincial Sports Awards next year”.

These winners are inspiring many other Western Cape athletes to perform at their best. The next Sport Awards ceremony will take place in the Boland on 20 November.
