Minister Mbombo wishes initiates well for summer initiation season

13 November 2014

On Thursday, 13 November 2014, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, hosted a press conference to announce the Western Cape’s readiness for the summer initiation season.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) has put many measures in place to ensure that initiates experience a safe journey to manhood.  The department is also committed to ensuring that cultural practices are preserved for future generations.

Minister Mbombo emphasised the joint responsibility between the Government and the communities for keeping their young men safe: “We as adults must ensure that our young men experience this cultural practice in a way where they feel safe. Adults of the communities must ensure that the young people go to registered sites and that they will be taken care of.” she said.

DCAS has established a steering committee that deals with circumcision and the department has also formed partnerships with other organisations to ensure that this is a safe time for these young men.

Minister Mbombo wished all initiates for the upcoming season well and expressed her wish that they will all return safely to their communities.
