12 November 2014

On Thursday, 13 November 2014, the Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, will be announcing steps her department has taken to ensure that the province is ready for the summer initiation season of 2014.

With an estimated 313 initiates having died and around 1 865 injured due to initiation rituals gone wrong across the country, the Western Cape Government seeks to ensure that initiation and initiation schools are a safe place for young men going through this important rite of passage.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport has worked closely with local communities, initiation forums and traditional surgeons to come up with a comprehensive plan to ensure that no life is lost during this upcoming summer initiation season.

There will be opportunities for interviews and photographs.
