Walter Teka MOD centre show their stuff

Learners participating in the MOD (Mass participation; Opportunity and access; Development and growth) centre at Walter Teka Primary School in Nyanga showed off their talents in an exciting display of dancing, marimba music, juggling, drama and table tennis on 9 November 2014. The aim of the event was to show parents the sorts of MOD centre activities that their children are participating in after school every day and the many valuable lessons they are learning.

Anthony Lottering, head of the MOD Arts unit at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) said: “Buy-in from parents at all the centres is of the utmost importance. This was a good way to show all the parents the benefits of the centre at one time. There was a positive response to the showcase among learners and their parents.”

The crowd was introduced to juggling by code advisor Siyabonga Swelindawo. This new activity will be introduced to the centre soon. “It’s exciting to see that the centre will be incorporating juggling into its activities as it helps stimulate both right and left brain thinking. I am sure we will see positive results among participating learners,” said Swelindawo.

The MOD centre showcase at Walter Teka showed how the programme is providing learners with constructive and enjoyable ways of spending their free time, and how it is finding new ways to nurture and educate our learners, better together.
