Excited Golden Games athletes head to National Games

28 October 2014

On Sunday, 26 October 2014, over 50 Western Cape Golden Games athletes left to participate in the National Golden Games in Mpumalanga. They were seen off at the airport by Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) organised the regional and provincial Golden Games, which were held earlier this year. The best performing athletes from those events were chosen to represent the province at the National Games,

71-year-old Alice Boyd was one of the very excited participants gathered at the airport. “I am so happy to have this opportunity. It just proves that older people can still participate just like the younger generations.”

Minister Mbombo acknowledged the important role of the older generation when she addressed the group. “You are the people who have to take care of your families and be there for them in difficult times. Now it is your chance to shine.” she told the group.

The group left with their spirits high and promised the Minister they would do their best to return with the cup.

DCAS continues to support older people to maintain healthy and active lifestyles. We want community members to participate and support these Games. Let us build and active and healthy province BETTER TOGETHER.
