Congratulations Banyana Banyana for going through to AWC semi-finals

19 October 2014

Media Statement by Professor Nomafrench Mbombo, Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport

The Western Cape Government congratulates our national women’s football team for making it through the semi-finals of the African Women’s Championship.

This milestone comes after a 5-1 win against Algeria at Independence Stadium in Windhoek yesterday.

Banyana Banyana continues to make South Africa proud as they display impeccable skill and dedication to the sport.

This is despite the fact that this team still lags behind in comparison to their male counter-parts in terms of recognition and remuneration.

This sad state of affairs, revealed a  couple of weeks ago through a parliamentary question in the National Assembly, does little to encourage women to become professional athletes. Most importantly, this is a slap in the face of the struggle for equity of South African women.

We wish Banyanya Banyana all the very best in this tournament as the top three teams will qualify for the 2015 Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada.

With brilliant players like Portia Modise who scored her 100th goal in the match against Algeria in our team, I have no doubt that our national team will do extremely well.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport seeks to develop sport in this province so that we may have more high-calibre athletes to form part of our national teams.
