Fun and activities in the sun at the Golden Games

24 July 2014

On 16 July and 23 July respectively, the West Coast and Boland Golden Games were held. The events were sponsored by the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Western Cape Older Persons Forum, West Coast Municipality and the Cape Winelands Municipality.

Participants from as far as Wupperthal, Vredendal, Van Rhynsdorp and Doringbaai travelled to take part in a day of fun and activities in the West Coast. Participants in the Boland Golden Games travelled from Drakenstein, Breede Valley, Langeberg, Stellenbosch and Witzenberg.

The games, which encouraged healthy lifestyles and having fun for older persons, hosted a variety of events for participants. Mr Ismail Issel from Worcester, who took part in the very popular ball pass, said that since he had retired last year, being part of the Worcester Seniors Sport club had helped him to build a new routine and kept him active.

Hundreds of older persons took part at each event, with the oldest person taking part at the West Coast being 86 years old. This shows that no person is too old to live an active lifestyle.

The winners of the Golden Games held throughout the Western Cape will take part in the National Golden Games.

DCAS and the partners of the Golden Games believe that these events enhance the quality of life of older persons and give them a sense of dignity, improves their health and encourages them to embrace “active ageing”.
