"Road to Rio" Begins for Elite Beach Volleyball Athletes

6 June 2014
The Western Province Volleyball Union, with the support of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), Western Cape Sport Academy (WECSA) and the University of the Western Cape, hosted the official launch of the “Road to Rio” campaign on Wednesday, 4 June 2014.

The campaign aims to secure a place for two of the Western Cape’s best beach volleyball athletes at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Grant Goldschmidt and Leo Williams will be competing in their first 2016 Olympic qualifiers in Germany in June and will be competing in Norway, Switzerland and the Netherlands thereafter. Goldschmidt is a seasoned player in international events, having competed in beach volleyball at the London 2012 Olympics.

DCAS and WECSA have provided support to volleyball athletes through Western Province Volleyball in order to promote and grow the sport. Wayne Weitz of DCAS and WECSA wished Goldschmidt and Williams well for the road ahead. “We admire them for all the hard work they are putting in,” he said.

DCAS support is making beach volleyball more popular and contributing to South Africa’s vision of achieving an active and winning nation.
