Fun at Three Regional Indigenous Games Events

26 May 2014

Hundreds of Western Cape athletes participated in indigenous games events in the Overberg, Metropole and West Coast on 24 May 2014. Participants were competing for a place in their regional teams in contests organised by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

The Overberg event was held in Bredasdorp, while the Metropole and West Coast events took place in Gugulethu and Vredenburg respectively. Nine indigenous games were on offer: jukskei, morabaraba, diketo, dibeki, drie stokkies, ngati, ncuva, intonga and kho-kho. By the end of each event, teams had been selected to represent their regions and compete for a place in the Western Cape team.

West Coast participant Carel van der Merwe, who competed in drie-stokkies and jukskei, said it was fun to have been part of this year’s games. “Although I didn’t make the regional team, I still enjoyed it. I’m still proud that I tried my best. Hopefully, I will make the team next year.”

Philasande Macwilli of DCAS praised participants for being brave enough to compete on the day. “It’s important that you play indigenous games on a daily basis. Establish clubs in your communities and play the games competitively.” He also encouraged those who didn’t make the cut to work hard so they are prepared for next year.

The celebration of Africa Day on 25 May reminded us that indigenous games form an integral part of Africa’s rich history and heritage. The regional competitions showed that by actively playing our indigenous games, we can promote and preserve the cultural diversity, national heritage and history of the people of South Africa.
